Outdoor basketball training is allowed … but no pass

Basketball Ireland has clarified the activities that its clubs can undertake during Level 5 restrictions.

While the elite national leagues have already stopped, there are limited group training options still open for basketball clubs at the junior level, while adults must train alone outdoors, with all sports facilities closed during the six weeks of Level 5 guidelines.

Adults must complete all training sessions within five kilometers of their homes, while all training for minors must take place outdoors, without allowing the ball to pass.

Children can participate in non-contact outdoor workouts, but under the following strict conditions:

  • Outdoor training should be non-contact
  • Pod numbers are limited to 15 people, trainers are included in this number
  • No mixing between pods
  • Outdoor training should be supervised
  • Workouts must maintain a social distancing of 2 meters at all times

Basketball Ireland CEO Bernard O’Byrne also highlighted the fact that non-contact training did not allow basketball to pass between players.

“We celebrate the fact that children will still be able to train outdoors in groups of up to 15, but please note that passing the ball is prohibited. Children can travel more than 5 km to attend training.”

Basketball Ireland’s instructions came a day after the Back to Sport Expert Group, on behalf of Sport Ireland, clarified what is and is not allowed at Level 5.

Professional and elite sports are allowed to continue as long as they adhere to “comprehensive protocols, ensuring extraordinary levels of control and compliance.”

Elite sport is defined as professional athletes or athletes who participate in professional competition; member of a high-performance team funded by Sport Ireland; those who compete in major international events, including the European and world championships, the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Group reported that these are senior athletes only within one of the following categories:

  • Athletes of the 2020 International Carding Program
  • Players of the Ireland 2020 team golf program
  • Senior riders in Show-Jumping, Eventing and Dressage
  • Senior team players in Hockey, Cricket and Rugby Sevens
  • Inter-county sport specifically refers to senior competition organized by the Gaelic Athletic Association, the Gaelic Women’s Football Association or the Camogie Association.

The Group also clarified what non-contact training meant for school-age children.

  • Juvenile activity refers to those in elementary and high school who are 18 years of age or younger.
  • Participants and coaches can travel beyond the 5km limit to attend training. Vehicle sharing should continue to be avoided
  • Outdoor facilities can be opened only to allow the activity to take place. Only those who participate and complete the training session should attend.
