Temporary security measures are being introduced in Dublin’s Phoenix Park starting next Monday in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and to ensure that social distancing can be maintained.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) said the use of the park as a recreational space has increased significantly in recent weeks.
In a statement, OPW said the current use of cyclists and pedestrians “has posed significant new road safety problems that have not been experienced until now and will be exacerbated by the reintroduction of vehicles” in the park.
He said the measures being introduced “aim to provide the public with a safe place to practice social distancing from each other while walking, running, exercising and cycling and adhering to the two-meter (distance) rule.” .
OPW said the measures are being introduced in consultation with Gardaí.
The temporary measures being introduced include the following:
- Provision of cocooning space in the walled garden of the Phoenix Park Visitor Center from 10am to 1pm daily
- Provision of priority cocooning parking at the Phoenix Park Visitor Center for those who take refuge and use the walled garden
- Reuse of part of North Road from Cabra Gate to Garda Headquarters as a 2m wide trail
- Instillation of one-way bike lanes on the shoulder of Chesterfield Avenue to facilitate social distancing
- Converting current bike lanes adjacent to Chesterfield Avenue into footpaths.
- Parking lots open at 10 am every day from May 18 in line with Phase One of the Government’s roadmap
- Dedicated parking areas for those who exercise early in the morning
- Prioritization of parking for Dublin Zoo guests in conjunction with its gradual reopening
- Introduction of the shared space for pedestrians and cyclists on Kyber Road
- Reopening of the perimeter vehicular gates at 10am daily from June 8 in line with Phase Two of the roadmap
OPW said the measure will be reviewed periodically in accordance with HSE guidelines and government advice.
