An internal Garda investigation is underway into an event at a Garda station in County Waterford to mark an officer’s promotion.

The meeting, which took place in mid-November during the Level 5 restrictions, is now being investigated by an out-of-district chief superintendent.

Two gardaí who attended the event later tested positive for Covid-19, although it was later established that the virus was not contracted at the meeting.

The meeting is believed to have been disclosed during the contract tracking process.

The senior investigating officer will attempt to establish whether the event was organized or impromptu.

If it is deemed to have been organized, then it is a violation of Covid-19 regulations, and gardaí will consult with the DPP about possible sanctions.

A Garda spokesperson said: “On Friday, November 13, Garda staff who attended and worked in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines made a short presentation to mark the occasion for a transfer, meeting the distancing guidelines. Social.

“On Saturday, November 14, 2020, HSE identified and contacted a person as a close contact for a family member who had tested positive for Covid-19.

“This person subsequently also tested positive for Covid-19. This person was properly at work prior to being contacted by HSE as a close contact.

“A Garda Síochána will contact HSE’s contact tracing service if requested.”
