Student representatives from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organization (INMO) are “deeply disappointed” with a report on the treatment of student nurses and midwives and the offer of a € 100 weekly grant from the Department of Health.

Nursing and midwifery students have strongly criticized the report on their treatment during the pandemic released tonight.

The student branch of INMO said the report does not reflect the high risk of Covid-19 that Irish hospitals now represent, nor the work they will be asked to do in the coming weeks and months.

INMO has said the report does not address any issues for senior interns and said they have sought an urgent meeting with the Minister of Health to discuss the “current reality” facing nursing and midwifery students “and how it can be done. tackle better. ” ”.

INMO Secretary General Phil Ní Sheaghdha said: “Nursing students and midwives have been doing incredible work on the front lines. They participated in this process in good faith and are deeply disappointed with this report.

“The Covid situation has deteriorated rapidly. This report is now out of date and no longer reflects the risk or work that students will be taking on in the coming weeks.

“It is time for the Minister to do the right thing. You should pay students the health care assistant fee, something that was done before the pandemic.

“This would better reflect the work and risks that students are taking in Covid-intensive hospitals,” said Ms Ní Sheaghdha.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald called the € 100 grant offer “a government failure (again) to recognize and respect the essential work of these front-line students who face pressure and personal risk. ” On twitter.
