The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet today to discuss the recent surge in Covid-19 cases and decide whether recommendations for additional restrictions are required.
The meeting comes amid concerns about the high incidence of the virus in some counties.
The Health Department reported one more death yesterday, while 429 new cases were confirmed.
There are currently only two counties, Dublin and Donegal, in Level 3 of the Government’s Living with Covid plan with all other areas in Level 2.
Today, NPHET members, including Acting Medical Director Dr. Ronan Glynn, will meet to review key virus trends and decide whether recommendations should be made to move other locations to Level 3 restrictions.
Public health officials have raised concerns about Cork, Galway, Roscommon and Monaghan, where cases have increased.
However, last night, Dr. Glynn warned that Covid-19 is now increasing everywhere and that all counties are going in the wrong direction.
He said the window of opportunity was closing so that it does not become a national issue.
Dr. Glynn said he would not speculate on whether further recommendations will be required, today, shortly or not, as he again called on all sectors throughout the country to follow the public health measures.
Meanwhile, HSE CEO Paul Reid has said that it is important that we do not stigmatize parts of society in relation to Covid-19.
“The blame has shifted from travel, meat plants, direct provision, schools and young people. The virus does not discriminate as it is transmitted in the community,” he said on Twitter.
“Stigmatization has hurt our society in the past.”
