NPHET Responds to Possibility of Further Extending Ireland’s Blockade

Dr. Ronan Glynn has said that NPHET is not considering extending the lockdown despite worrying signs.

The deputy medical officer said two weeks is too long to know where Ireland might be and that no discussions are taking place on an extension.

Dr. Glynn said, “One of the biggest detriments to our progress is an open focus on where we could be six weeks from now. We have to focus on today and tomorrow and what people are doing individually.

“We have no idea where we’ll be in two weeks right now. It could improve a lot, it could get a lot worse.”

“What that dictates is what people do today, tomorrow, and the next day. We won’t see the outcome of those interactions for ten days.

“This is not a message that we could recommend further measures or the extension of Level Five, we really don’t want to contemplate any of that, and we are not contemplating it at this time.

“But we need communities to take advantage of opportunities, and I know this is not easy, it is very difficult for people, I appreciate it. I would ask people to stay with us and focus on the basics.

“Don’t worry too much about what is being said internationally or what may happen in six weeks, focus on what is happening today and tomorrow.”
