The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet again today to discuss the worrying increase in Covid-19 cases.
Medical director Dr. Tony Holohan said he is “deeply concerned” by the current trend, and health experts believe we could reach 1,500 cases a day and have up to 450 people in hospital by November 7.
Speaking on Wednesday, Dr. Holohan said: “All key indicators of the disease have deteriorated further in the three days since the last NPHET meeting on Sunday October 4.
“COVID-19 is spreading in our community in a very worrying way. We have to break these chains of transmission.
“80 cases of COVID-19 were hospitalized in August, 206 in September and 77 so far in October.
“In August, we reported 4 COVID-19 related deaths in total, 34 in September and today, October 7, we report 8 COVID-19 related deaths this month.”
The news comes after Dr. Holohan revealed that he spoke to the Minister of Health about the troubling trends over the weekend, before a story leaked about NPHET recommending a Level 5 lockdown.
The news sparked controversy after Stephen Donnelly did not reveal that he was aware of such concerns during a press conference earlier this week.
But in fact both Donnelly and Taoiseach Micheal Martin were aware of it.
Dr. Holohan said it was “very clear” during the two phone conversations.
Ireland recorded 611 new cases and five more deaths on Wednesday.
