NPHET has formally recommended that Dublin move to a level three Covid alert.

Medical experts have concluded that the high rates in Dublin differentiate the capital from the rest of the country.

And now additional restrictions have been recommended to try and stop the rampant spread of the virus.

Infection rates in Dublin exceed 100 per 100,000 in many areas, compared to rates of 3 in rural areas like Sligo and 9 in urban areas of Cork.

NPHET’s new evening group of senior officials will meet tonight to consider the impact of the counseling on the economy and the rest of society, as well as public health.

The next step will be the meeting of the special Covid Cabinet subcommittee tomorrow morning.

This is the elite group of ministers that includes the Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, Tánaiste, Leo Varadkar and the green leader, Eamon Ryan.

If they believe that the NPHET recommendation calls for a serious escalation to Level Three for Dublin, a full Cabinet meeting will be called for tomorrow afternoon for approval.
