North Korean state media reported that the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, made his first public appearance since speculation about his health began last month.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim cut the ribbon at the opening of a fertilizer factory.

Mr. Kim “attended the ceremony” on Friday and “all the participants erupted in thunderous cheers of ‘Hooray!'” When he appeared, KCNA said.

The North Korean leader has not made a public appearance since chairing a meeting of the Workers’ Party politburo on April 11.

The next day, state media reported on him inspecting fighter jets in an air defense unit.

The rumors and speculation about Kim’s health began after he did not appear in public on a key state holiday on April 15.

Earlier this week, South Korea’s minister for North Korean affairs said Kim could have missed the event due to concerns about the coronavirus, not because he is ill.

His absence from public ceremonies on the anniversary of the birth of his grandfather and the country’s founder, Kim Il-sung, was unprecedented.

South Korean officials emphasized that they had not detected unusual movements in North Korea and cautioned against reports that Kim could be ill.
