The finance minister has said that better-than-expected tax returns mean there will be no increases in income tax in the next budget.
While tax revenues are low compared to last year, Paschal Donohoe has said they are “less low than we would have expected in the very dark days of April.”
His comments are ahead of the publication of the Treasury figures for the third quarter of the year that will come out this afternoon.
“What we continue to see is our income tax performance holding up strongly under the circumstances, and it reminds me of our economy’s ability to recover, not just in 2020, but crucially to have created jobs and the money that need for utilities next year, “said Donohoe.
However, the Finance Minister could not confirm how much the carbon tax will be increased as part of the 2021 Budget.
“I have already indicated that there will be a new movement in carbon taxes. I started this process in last year’s budget, I will continue with this year’s budget. But the magnitude and amount of the movement, I am afraid it has not yet been agreed. by the Government. “
When asked about the findings of an investigation into Supreme Court Justice Seamus Woulfe’s attendance at the Oireachtas golf dinner, Donohoe said he believed Supreme Court Chief Justice Susan Denham took the matter very seriously. .
The report found that “there were no sufficient reasons” to justify a resignation.
“The principle of allowing our judiciary to conduct independent evaluations of the law is fundamental,” Donohoe said.
However, when asked about the fact that former Agriculture Minister Dara Calleary was forced to resign for also attending the golf dinner, Donohoe said: “I think what happened in political life was very hard, but appropriate.
“If you are in politics, if you are elected by the people, if you are creating laws in a parliamentary democracy, you depend on the consent of the people.
“But from a judicial point of view, judges are correctly separated from political life, both from public life, and a consequence of my respect for their independence is the requirement to refrain from commenting on the work they do and how they do it. “. . “
