There have been 518 other confirmed Covid-19 cases in Ireland, the Health Department said tonight.

No more deaths associated with the disease have been reported.

This brings the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases and 1,810 deaths in Ireland to 38,549.

Of the cases reported today:

  • 252 are men / 266 are women
  • 68% are under 45
  • 30% confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or close contacts of a confirmed case
  • 78 cases have been identified as community transmission
  • 134 were identified in Dublin, 53 in Cork, 49 in Limerick, 34 in Donegal, 32 in Meath and the remaining 216 cases are distributed in 20 counties.

Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan said there has been a “significant and worrying deterioration in the epidemiological situation nationwide” in recent days.

“It is vital that we do everything in our power now to halt the current trajectory at the national level and very substantially suppress the virus to a low level of transmission before the winter months,” he said in a statement.

He said people “should not be distracted” from the central public health messages of good hand hygiene, covering their faces, avoiding crowds, reducing social contacts and contacting their GP immediately if they experience symptoms.

Dr. Ronan Glynn, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, said: “Our top priorities must be protected. We must work together to keep our non-Covid health services open, keep our children in education and protect the lives of those most vulnerable to this disease. ”

Glynn, who was serving as medical director until he returned from Holohan at the weekend, added that solidarity is “more important now than ever” at work to suppress the virus.

The government is expected to announce tonight that the entire country will enter Level 3 of Covid-19 restrictions.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) recommended yesterday that the country move to Level 5, the highest level of restrictions.

A public announcement is expected later today.
