Nine people arrested by gardaí on foot of European arrest warrants

Nine people have been arrested by gardaí this week on the basis of European arrest warrants.

The seven men and two women, aged 28 to 63, were arrested between Monday, December 21 and Wednesday, December 23 as part of a coordinated effort by Gardaí attached to the Garda Extradition Unit and the National Office of Criminal Investigation. Garda. Local members from around the country also assisted with the arrests.

Any EU country can issue a European arrest warrant to request the return of a person who is wanted in that country for a crime. Most of the arrest warrants issued this week were for wanted people in the UK.

Det Superintendent Michael J. Mullen of the Garda Extradition Unit said the “significant” number of arrests represents An Garda Síochána’s “continued commitment to ensuring that those wanted on international arrest warrants are brought before the Justice”.

Among those arrested was a 63-year-old man in Longford wanted for sex crimes in the UK. A 32-year-old man in Dublin was also wanted in the UK for involvement in a criminal organization and fraud offenses; a 46-year-old man in Dublin for kidnapping, assault and criminal damage; a 42-year-old woman in Dundalk, Co Louth, for drug-related offenses; a 35-year-old woman in Mullingar, Co Westmeath for immigration offenses; a 43-year-old man in Galway for perjury and perverting the course of justice; and a 28-year-old man in Dublin for assault and drug-related offenses.

In Poland, a 52-year-old man was wanted in Wexford for fraud and a 39-year-old man in Naas, Co Kildare, for illegal prison and drug offenses.

Each of those arrested appeared in Superior Court and are currently on remand to reappear in Superior Court on January 8, a Garda spokeswoman said.
