Nicola Sturgeon apologizes for violating Covid rules at the wake: ‘There are no excuses’

Scotland’s PRIME MINISTER Nicola Sturgeon has said she has no “excuses” for breaking coronavirus rules and apologized in the Scottish Parliament after being photographed in a bar without wearing a mask.

An image published in the Scottish Sun shows the Prime Minister chatting with three people while standing at a distance but not wearing a mask.

Under the Scottish government’s coronavirus rules, customers in hospitality venues must wear a face cover except when seated, and must wear one when moving.

Sturgeon was at the bar last Friday for the funeral of a Scottish government official.

Speaking at the beginning of the Prime Minister’s Questions in Holyrood today, he said: “I want to take this opportunity to say how sorry I am for my breach of the rules that I ask everyone to follow every day.

“I took off my mask while briefly attending a funeral last week, I’m sure everyone will have seen a photo of me without it in the media this morning.

I want to make it clear today that regardless of the circumstances, I was wrong. There are no excuses. These rules apply to me just like everyone else, and the rules really matter.

“I’m kicking myself really hard, possibly harder than my worst critic could, but more importantly, I’ll make sure I don’t let my guard down again.”

He concluded his statement, as usual, with a reminder of the Government’s FACTS guidance on coronavirus.

“With an enormous dose of humility, let me remind you and most importantly myself, FACTS,” he said.

Wear face covers, avoid crowded places, wash your hands and surfaces regularly, stay six feet away from other homes, and isolate yourself and get tested if you have symptoms.

Under the coronavirus regulations introduced on September 14 in Scotland, face covers for customers and staff are mandatory when entering, exiting and moving around hospitality venues, and violations carry a fine of up to £ 60.

When the photo was published last night, the SNP leader said she had briefly removed her mask, adding that it was “a stupid mistake and I am so sorry.”

The Scottish Sun reported that he was at the Stable Bar and Restaurant after attending a funeral at the nearby Mortonhall Crematorium.

A Scottish Conservative spokesman said: “The Prime Minister should know better.

By forgetting the rules and not setting an appropriate example, you are undermining essential public health messages.

“It is a mistake that an ordinary member of the public would not get away with it. There can’t be one rule for Nicola Sturgeon and another for everyone else. “

Scotland’s Attorney General, Humza Yousaf, tweeted: “FM has approached the pandemic by being frank from the start.

“She has apologized for an accidental lapse (which I suspect most of us have had one in the last 9 months).

“I’ve known her for 15 years and she’s her harshest critic. I’m sure most people will understand, accept apologies, and move on. “

Scotland’s National Clinical Director, Professor Jason Leitch, told BBC Radio Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland program today: “I think the Prime Minister knows this matters, I think she is as furious with herself as some might be with her.

“We had a short conversation last night and she is absolutely pissed off at this little lapse of concentration.

“It’s so easy to do, we live in a completely different world than a year ago, right?”

He said Sturgeon was “about to walk out the door and they called him.”

He added: “He took off his mask because he was leaving, and then (he came back) and (had) a little lapse, he didn’t put it back on.

It just reinforces the nature of these instructions and this virus again for all of us, and she is as crazy about herself as everyone else.
