NI executive to review current Covid-19 restrictions

The Northern Ireland Executive will meet today to decide whether to extend the Covid-19 restrictions for another two weeks.

A variety of options may be on the table at today’s meeting, which is scheduled for 10 am.

Compared to south of the border, Northern Ireland continues to report higher rates of coronavirus, with higher numbers of hospitalizations and more patients in intensive care units.

Current measures in place to curb the spread of the virus are expected to be lifted on Friday, but public health officials have advised against reopening bars and restaurants, which along with nightclubs and beauty salons have been closed since mid-October.

The Northern Ireland retail sector has been allowed to remain open.

Executive Health Minister Robin Swann has said he would like to keep the hospitality sector closed for a further fifteen days after Thursday, reflecting what is happening in the south and in England.

However, some DUP ministers said they would prefer to see the measures lifted after midnight Thursday night, as originally planned.

If the regulations are to be amended, the ministers must give their instructions to the officials no later than tomorrow night.
