SEVERAL PEOPLE have been injured after a bus in New York City crashed into road barriers.

The articulated bus, often called a ‘flex’ bus, has been left “hanging from the overpass onto the road below,” the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said.

The FDNY said eight people have been evaluated and treated for injuries after the bus fell from a height of 50 feet (15 meters).

“FDNY units are at the scene of a car accident on University Ave and Cross Bronx Expressway in the Bronx, where a tandem bus crashed through barriers and is hanging from the overpass onto the highway below,” the department he said on Twitter.

The Bronx is a borough of New York City.

FDNY Acting Battalion Chief Steven Moore said police are “making sure all fuel and other hazardous materials inside the vehicle are secured until the bus can be stopped on the road.”

Deputy Police Chief Paul Hopper, who oversaw emergency medical treatment and transportation in the accident, said: “We evaluated and treated a total of eight patients from this accident.

“The bus fell approximately 50 feet onto the access road. The patients suffered injuries consistent with a fall from such a great height. “
