Dublin fire crews report a “very busy” Halloween night with bonfires.
By early evening, they were responding to 132 incidents in Dublin, including bonfires near homes in Citywest and Raheny.
A bonfire near the Dart line between Raheny and Harmonstown stations has caused the disruption of services.
As of last Thursday there had been a 300% increase in calls from firefighters to bonfires compared to last year.
Last night, five units of the Dublin Fire Brigade dealt with a warehouse fire in Santry, where a cache of bonfire material was set ablaze.
There was another dangerous fire in West Dublin, while this afternoon the units had to deal with several fires in apartments and apartment complexes in the city center.
Darren O’Connor, a Dublin Fire Brigade station officer, said they have to intervene if the fire or smoke is causing a risk to life or property.
He said that if conditions turn windy tonight it could cause more risk by blowing embers and sparks.
The increase in bonfire activity this year follows several years in which incidents had been decreasing.
Celebrating Halloween in the midst of a pandemic
Elsewhere, parents and children in a small village on the Westmeath-Offaly border have been hosting a novel Halloween drive-through tonight, the goal of which is to celebrate this night of ghosts and demons and stay safe within the Covid-19 regulations.
Children from the Stepping Stones Early Learning Center in Ballinahown dressed up in some of the most colorful and daring costumes ever seen in the area, and then drove with their parents through their community, which has already been decorated with pumpkins and a variety of colors of Halloween, before collecting their specially sanitized Halloween treat packages from their cars.
“We are delighted with the positive response to our trick or treating,” Lorraine Farrell, owner of the Stepping Stones Early Learning Center, previously said.
“We cannot wait to see all the children. We would like to remind everyone, that due to Covid restrictions, this event is for people who live within 5 kilometers of Ballinahown village. We are sure everyone understands that safety is our priority. ” “
The drive-through started at 6pm and lasted one hour.
