Gary Neville claims Manchester United is wary of “doing” in the transfer market and, as a result, is reluctant to spend.

His former club has spent more than expected to achieve the best goals in recent years and Neville says that clubs that have players they want to sign now know very well.

United are trying to change that policy and have so far refused to comply with Borussia Dortmund’s demands on Jadon Sancho.

The Red Devils have signed Donny van de Beek in this window, but his flaws were obvious in his 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Neville says United “does not have the authority or control in the transfer market”, unlike Liverpool, which last week got Thiago Alcántara cheap.

The insider also used Chelsea’s transfer business this summer as an example of another club that is “sharp and precise,” in stark contrast to United’s approach.

“Not feeling like they want to do something in the market, because of what has happened in the last eight years, I think people there (at United) have lost confidence and have now tried to go the other way around in terms of ‘we can’t pay for more, ‘”Neville said in Gary Neville’s podcast.

“You see Liverpool getting a player for £ 40 million, for £ 25 million. [Timo] Werner [at Chelsea ] it is obviously quite cheap compared to some of the prices you see in the market.

“It seems that Manchester United always have to pay a lot of money. I don’t think people at the club like that. They will feel like they are easy prey and there is a suggestion of that.

“The problem is that they have to find a way to do business and they cannot do it efficiently. It is negligent not to put the team in their place.

“They have had six months to put the team in place since the closure. So much time to deliberate, call Zoom, explore, and connect with agents.

“There is no excuse for not closing their deals towards the beginning of the season. They needed four or five players. I know Liverpool have only done their thing in the last few days, but there is a feeling that Liverpool are in control.

“It is easier when they are champions but Manchester United have the money. If they can spend $ 90 million to $ 100 million on Sancho, they have the money to do the deals.

“They don’t have the quality and experience of football people with the right club experience. It looks like a complex and convoluted structure. I’m not sure where the decisions are.

“Liverpool and Chelsea are sharp and precise, the same as Manchester City. United don’t seem to be able to do their business and that, unfortunately, has been a big problem, whether it’s hiring the wrong players …

“United’s recruiting has been better in the last 18 months, but there’s still the problem that they can’t get deals on the line fast enough to get the team together in time for the start of the season and you were done with that yesterday ( against Palace).

“What it does yesterday is weaken them because now the clubs that want the players to leave are going to look at it and think, ‘We relax, they are going to come, they are going to have to.’

“That is the problem that United has. They do not have the authority and control in the transfer market.

“The people who are in charge of this will not like to hear it, but they have to listen to it because they are not doing their job. The players and the coach are criticized, but the people in the stands have the job of putting a strong team on the field to build a team that can win the league.

“And in the last eight years, they haven’t, and it’s a problem.”
