The US space agency NASA sent a message to an Irish boy who dreams of being a captain there one day.
Cork schoolboy Adam King, 6, appeared last night on the Late Late Toy Show with host Ryan Tubridy to tell him and the more than 1.5 million people who had tuned into his plan for the future.
In a heartbreaking moment, Adam got out of his wheelchair and explained to Tubridy that while he can’t be an astronaut because he has brittle bones, he can certainly be a commander on the ground.
The Irish Embassy in Washington intervened since the show aired to tweet Adam and tell him that they will be contacting NASA on his behalf.
And NASA has now responded to the appearance of the little man.
The agency tweeted: “Adam’s good heart and adventurous spirit inspire us.
“There’s room for everyone at NASA, and we can’t wait for you to one day join our team of dreamers.
“We’ll be here when it’s ready.”
Adam was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). It is a condition that causes brittle bones and stunted growth, which can make you prone to fractures.
Despite this, he is still a very active kid – he plays with TWO GAA clubs and soccer with Youghal United. Tennis will also start next week.
He had traveled from Youghal with Daddy David while his brothers Danny, Katie, Robert, and baby Sarah watched with Mommy Fiona in the family home.
During the show, Tubs hopped on a rocket ship before Adam got up from his chair to give him an official countdown.
He then met his hero, John Doyle, a janitor at Temple Street Children’s Hospital.
Images of Adam’s face lit up spread around the world and his infectious attitude was admired by all.
The frontline worker told the nation that “Adam has such a contagious smile that even the darkest planet would light up.”
Excited Dad David told Cork Beo of his pride and said that the boy we saw on TV is exactly what he is in real life.
He said: “It has been beautiful to see this outpouring of people in Ireland and around the world. It is very humbling. To say that we are overwhelmed is an understatement.
“It was very emotional to watch from backstage, it was beautiful, I was so impressed with how relaxed Adam was.
“Apart from all the wonder and magic of the toy show, as a parent, all you want is for your child to feel comfortable and be himself.”
“He did all of that, he was absolutely himself and he looked so genuinely on camera.
“Ryan was masterful to him. You could see they had such a good relationship and he got on so well.
“For him to have such an enjoyable experience, and meeting JD was wonderful for him.”
