Murphy mourns worst loss of his time at Leicester

Leicester Tigers rugby director Geordan Murphy admitted the team suffered the worst defeat of their career at Welford Road after the Wasps swept them 54-7.

The Tigers leaked eight attempts at the Ricoh Arena after falling apart in the second half, paying the price for fielding a starting XV that contained just 95 Gallagher Premiership starts.

A miserable streak continues for Leicester, who have now recorded just one win in their last seven games, and former Ireland international player Murphy accepted responsibility for one of the lowest points of his 23 years at the club as a player, coach and official.

“That’s a step backwards for us and it’s not good enough,” he said.

“I would say that all the fans who are hugely disappointed and feeling ill are probably not as ill as me and the coaching staff.

“I’ve been here a long time and that’s the biggest loss I’ve ever been involved in. It’s not pretty and I feel like I’ve been punched several times in the face.

“We have to learn the lessons because we have a response time of four days and somehow we have to get back on the horse because that was not good enough. It is my responsibility. I feel quite poor.”

“It’s a bitter pill. We’ve made some really positive progress in every game we’ve played, but there is an opportunity to learn some important lessons there because we were substandard in the second half.”

Meanwhile, Sale achieved four consecutive Gallagher Premiership victories for the first time since February 2016 with a 24-17 win over a Saracen team, who will face Leinster in the quarterfinals of the Champions Cup in Heineken on September 19, at AJ Bell Stadium. to stay the course of the play-offs.

Steve Diamond’s men had the game assured at halftime when they led 21-7 and although the bonus point escaped them, the result was enough to keep them in pole position for second place.
