1983 Cork hero Tadhg Murphy is happy to let Mark Keane take charge of the dramatic goals that defeated Kerry after yesterday’s memorable Munster final.
Murphy ended Kerry’s bid for Munster’s ninth straight title 37 years ago, while Keane’s timing has given the Rebels a chance to clinch a first crown since 2012.
Murphy, speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne, admitted that it brought back all the memories of his best day.
“There were a lot of similarities. The weather was dire in 1983 and it was yesterday and Cork came into the game as ‘hopeless’ in both games as well.
“Yesterday was a knockout situation like 1983 too. There was no place to hide, the Cork boys came out fighting and they were worth the win.
“I had 37 great years with that goal and I got a lot out of it. If Mark can get a fraction of that, he’ll be doing very, very well. Sunday was his day and I’m delighted for him.” . “
If he didn’t immediately remind Murphy of that famous day, many friends and former colleagues certainly helped him along the way after yesterday’s game.
He felt the county experienced a unique boost during the current restrictions on society.
“It was unreal. I got text messages last night and this morning. It was like reliving the past. It was a huge boost for Cork in locking down Level 5. I’d say if you check the Richter scale in Cork when Mark got that goal “It would be fine there. All the homes in Cork erupted when that target entered.”
“I really think Kerry wasn’t prepared for the intensity and attitude that Cork brought to that game. I thought Cork was worth the win even though he was a late winner. In general, they were that hungry, and very often the Hunger is the best sauce ever. “

Murphy anticipated that Cork would explain this to Kerry from the noises coming from camp in recent weeks, and that there was little focus on the home team going into the game.
“If you look at the game logically, Kerry came in as Division 1 champions with Cork in Division 3. If you look at it, you would say Kerry all the time. I just pointed out that Cork and Kerry at Munster Championship games very often. take a life of your own That is exactly what happened.
“Ronan McCarthy has done a great job. He had a difficult baptism, but brought the group together. I was very captivated by an article by Mark Collins during the week. Mark was outstanding yesterday. He just pointed out that for Cork to progress I need to get a great result against one of the largest teams.
“I just told myself that the players are focused and they know what it’s about. This could be another 1983. This is precisely how it turned out. Cork came in under the radar, totally helpless, and that’s the best way to do it.” . that. They got their reward. “
