Tottenham targeted Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood in their 6-1 win over Manchester United, purposely exploiting his defensive flaws.

Spurs insiders told the Manchester evening news that Serge Aurier and Sergio Reguilon ‘killing’ United ‘because Greenwood and Rashford don’t defend’ was a rehearsed plan.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw frequently ran out of cover as Spurs full-backs were constantly being given time on the ball and acres of space to run.

Two of the Spurs goals came from the side of Shaw, who José Mourinho knows has a tendency to abandon his position.

“Chelsea moves the ball well, but they don’t look for overlap much,” Mourinho said expertly during the interval of United’s 4-0 win over Chelsea last season. “When they do, Maguire is the one who has to jump on the outside as the United midfielders are not defending in the area.

“When Maguire has to cover for Luke Shaw, he will learn that he has to do this many times during the season, the space in the face of the ball, someone has to come.”

The report also claims that Spurs staff correctly predicted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting eleven, including Eric Bailly replacing Victor Lindelof.

Mourinho decided to push United to take advantage of Paul Pogba’s defensive fragility and prevent the Frenchman from having time to pick passes and grow in the game.

He and Nemanja Matic, who was substituted at halftime with United 4-1 down, looked uncomfortable and lethargic.
