José Mourinho claims he was offering Frank Lampard some sage advice in a heated exchange of sidelines during Tottenham’s victory over Chelsea on Tuesday.

A long night was on the cards when the Spurs, playing without a recognized striker on the field, trailed in the 19th minute on Timo Werner’s first Chelsea goal.

But Mourinho’s men improved as the night wore on and deservedly tied in the 83rd minute through Erik Lamela, who sent him to penalties.

The first nine shots from the spot were successfully converted before Mason Mount missed the decisive one to send the Spurs to the quarterfinals.

It gave Mourinho a first managerial win over Frank Lampard and the pair ended the night as friends, although it heated up midway through the first half.

Mourinho was offended by his former midfielder’s talk when the Portuguese appealed for a foul and offered him some advice, mixed with some expletives.

“With Frank, the most important thing is my feelings for him, more than the words we exchange,” Mourinho said. “I owe him everything he gave me, he always gave me everything he had as a player and I never forget that.

“My feelings for him will always be feelings of how much I owe him for how amazing he was a player, a friend.

“The only thing I was saying, just an opinion from an old coach to a talented young coach, which was when the players need us is when they are losing, when they are winning we don’t need to be the protagonists of the touchline, we have to be there when they are losing.

“In the last game, when they lost 3-0, I felt very sorry for him because he was sad and quiet in his chair.”

However, Lampard played down the incident.

He said: “We were having fun on the line. I get along well with José and I think he told me.

“I commented on the fact that he seemed to talk more to the referee than to his players, so it’s just a moment with us. I have great respect for José, no matter what he says on the touchline.

“I think he was feeling the feeling of the first half and what it was like. Everything was fine at the end of the game and that will never change. “
