Mourinho, eager to see Madrid’s reaction to Bale’s triumph

Tottenham manager José Mourinho is intrigued to see how the reaction is to Gareth Bale’s winning goal against Brighton in Madrid.

Bale got off the bench to finish home the first goal of his second spell in North London and it was an important one as he deserved a 2-1 victory that led Spurs to second place in the Premier League.

The Wales international returned to Spurs on loan from Real Madrid for a season in September after a torrid last couple of years in the Spanish capital, where he fell out of favor with Zinedine Zidane and was widely criticized by the fans.

It has been a slow start for him, but he is feeling the love at the club where he became the most expensive player in the world and Mourinho was delighted.

“I’m very happy for him, especially for him because he deserves it,” he said. “When I have five minutes I go to Safari to look at the Madrid websites to see what they say.

“He knows that we care about him and we know that he cares about us, the team and the club, the Spurs. He fits the bill perfectly, he’s very calm, very intelligent, he has good feelings.

“Before he had bad feelings, because the training process was hard and his body suffered a bit, but we gave him what he needed as a whole.

“I mean sports science, medicine, my assistants, the other players. I am very happy that he scored this winning goal.

“I’ve already said it for a week or so, I’m saying it’s getting better. It’s not just by looking at it, the data supports our training process. We knew. The good news is that Gareth knows it too. We share ideas and we share feelings.

“He doesn’t have 90 minutes of a Premier League game on his legs yet, so we are using the Europa League to complement his training process.

“We are using some matches in the Premier League when we decide to face him and the normal tendency for him will of course be to get better and better. I will always be this careful with him until we feel like he’s ready. “

Bale came to the Spurs’ rescue while they were detained in a game dominated by VAR drama.

VAR official Jonathan Moss awarded Spurs an early penalty, awarding Harry Kane who was fouled in the penalty area when he looked marginal, and Kane sent the penalty home for his 149th Premier League goal.

The referee then ruled that Brighton should not receive what looked like a clear penalty, and even advised referee Graham Scott to check for Tariq Lamptey’s second-half draw, but the goal held up after what looked like a foul on Pierre. -Emile Hojbjerg.

Mourinho said it shouldn’t be the coaches’ responsibility to go out and try to explain the decisions.

“They are decisions that I think you should explain and not leave us in front of you, and us explaining things that many, many times we cannot find an explanation,” he added. “So I prefer not to talk about it.

“I see Scott as a good referee. He had the opportunity to go to the screen and see on the screen what we saw in the bank on our iPad. I should explain it, but I know that is not going to happen, so let’s go ahead and talk about a very difficult game that we won.

Graham Potter took a similar view and chose to bring out the positive aspects of a brave defeat.

“There is a little talking point about our penalty decision,” he said. “It’s another conversation about arbitration and VAR that doesn’t interest me too much. I can’t control what they do, when I saw them live I wasn’t sure about Harry Kane’s.

“I thought ours was a bit… similar to Tariq Lamptey’s against Crystal Palace, and there may have been a foul before our goal.

“Disappointed with the result, but very satisfied with the positives. We put a lot of pressure on Tottenham and we are disappointed that nothing came out.

“It would be more worrying if we didn’t play well, our performances have been good overall.”
