More than € 1 million in cash has been seized after gardai carried out two raids in Dublin today.
The cash was found inside a vehicle during one of the searches, which took place in North Dublin and the city center.
It follows a previous cash seizure at Coolock of 117,000 euros; both searches targeted the criminal activities of a Dublin criminal gang.
The Garda deputy commissioner has said the find “will contribute to the disruption and possible eventual dismantling of certain organized crime groups.”
A Garda spokesperson said: “On January 17, 2021, the Garda National Drug and Organized Crime Office (GNDOCB), with the help of the Garda Dog Unit, conducted search operations in the north of Dublin and Dublin city center, targeting alleged criminal activities of an organized criminal group.
“During the operation, two premises were searched and several vehicles were seized.
“During a search of a vehicle, a concealment of cash was discovered. The vehicle and its contents are still under review. However, the amount seized is believed to exceed one million euros.
“Investigations continue.”
In another search operation this weekend, GNDOCB seized € 117,000 worth of cash along with a vehicle and a Rolex watch. A man in his 30s was arrested and remains detained at the Coolock Garda station.
Deputy Commissioner John O’Driscoll, Head of Serious and Organized Crime, said: “We continue to target those who do the most harm in our community. This seizure of a significant amount of cash, we believe, will contribute to disruption and the ultimate potential the dismantling of certain organized criminal groups that we continue to target, based on the success achieved previously in recent years ”.
