Mickey Harte announced as Louth’s new football coach within three years

Louth has introduced Mickey Harte as his new senior soccer manager in a three-year period.

Just 10 days after stepping down after 18 years in charge of Tyrone, when the county board refused to give him a one-year extension, Louth made the surprising announcement tonight that Harte will replace Wayne Kierans.

The three-time All-Ireland winner will have Gavin Devlin, his former center-back and coach for most of the last decade, with him for all three years and will also oversee the U-20 team.

It is an enormously ambitious appointment for Wee County and is sure to spark renewed interest in its fortunes.

Many thought Harte wouldn’t run a county outside of Tyrone, but he quickly assumed a role that would be geographically convenient for him.

A few weeks ago Tony McEntee was thought to be a favorite for the job, but Louth President Peter Fitzpatrick said the county would look elsewhere.

Louth has had an All-Ireland winning coach in charge in recent years, but Peter McGrath, who guided Down to success in 1991 and 1994, left after just one season (2018).
