Metal monolith discovered in Utah creates mystery

A MYSTERIOUS METAL monolith found planted in the ground in a remote part of the United States has sparked a mystery this week.

The object was discovered in Utah by state officials helping to count sheep from a helicopter.

Pilot Bret Hutchings told local news channel KSL TV: “That was the strangest thing I have come across in all my years of flying.”

State wildlife officials were aboard the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) helicopter counting bighorn sheep when the discovery was made.

Hutchings said it was one of the biologists on board who saw the object and encouraged him to step back to take a closer look.

What they saw was a metal monolith, which Hutchings estimated to be 10 to 12 feet tall, embedded in the red earth.

He said, “We were thinking, ‘Is this something NASA has put in there or something? Are satellites bouncing or something? ‘”

Hutchings said his best guess was that it had been put there by a “new wave artist” or a fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

After the DPS shared images of the structure on its social media channels, the followers came up with their own theories.

One suggested it could be a prop for a TV show, another joked that it was the planet’s kill switch, while a third claimed to have placed it there himself “hoping it would scare someone one day.”

DPS said in a statement that the exact location of the monolith was not disclosed for public safety reasons.

He added that installing structures without a permit on public land administered by the federal government is illegal.
