Met Eireann warns of icy weather this week with the possibility of snow across the country.

The national forecaster predicts a cold ending to 2020 with temperatures dropping to -3 ° C on Tuesday night.

But ahead of snowy weather, a wind advisory remains in place for seven counties until 2 p.m. Monday due to Storm Bella.

Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork and Kerry can expect gusts of up to 110 km / h due to the storm that was named by the UK Met Office.

However, once those winds die down, freezing conditions will really take over.

A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “It will be a cold ending to 2020 with icy nights.

“There will be some winter showers with the risk of more persistent rain, sleet and possibly snow during the middle of the week.

“Very cold and icy Tuesday night with scattered winter rains continuing near coasts in the west and northwest, mostly dry elsewhere during a time with clear spells and icy stretches that develop as temperatures drop between -3 and +2 degrees.

“A streak of rain will move into parts of the southwest and west late at night, with the possibility of some sleet and snow through the midlands and the southeast with variable light to moderate cyclonic breezes.”

“Another cold day Wednesday with rain and sleet in parts of the west and south with a period of sleet or snow in the east.

“This will clear to the south at night. Afternoon temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees in general, however, will be warmer in Munster with highs of 5 to 7 degrees in variable light to moderate cyclonic breezes.”

“Very cold and icy Wednesday night with some patches of ice. Many places will be dry and clear, but there will likely be scattered winter showers in the northern counties and scattered showers will also occur near some western coasts. Minimal during at night from -2 to + 2 degrees with light winds from the northwest “.

New Years Eve and the day will be extremely cold with some winter showers, however it will be a bit milder than the night before.

The forecaster added: “Thursday (New Years Eve) will continue to be cold, dry in many places with sunny spells, but there will be scattered rains in some northern and western coastal counties, some wintry in higher ground. Highs of only 3 to 6 degrees with moderate winds from the northwest.

“Scattered somewhat wintry showers Thursday night with clear spells, also with frost and icy patches developing once again. Lower temperatures of 0 to +2 degrees with light to moderate breezes from the north.

“Cold on New Years Day, most places will be dry with good periods of sunshine, but there will be some isolated showers in coastal areas, temperatures of 4-7 degrees in the afternoon with light breezes from the north. Frosts during the night once again”.
