Strong winds will hit the south and west coasts later this afternoon, with a yellow status warning in six counties.

Met Éireann issued the alert for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick, and the winds are expected to reach average speeds of 50 to 65 km / h and gusts of 90 to 110 km / h.

The warning goes into effect at 3 p.m. and will last until 1 a.m. Thursday.

The forecaster warned that strong winds coupled with high tides will pose an increased risk of coastal flooding.

The UK Met Office has also issued a high wind advisory in Antrim and Down counties.

The yellow status warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 3 a.m. Thursday.
