The western half of the country will be hit by hail and thunderstorms today.
Met Eireann is forecasting poor conditions to make it a miserable day in many parts of Ireland with thunder and lightning adding to the problems.
It will also be cold with temperatures not exceeding 10 ° C in most parts of the country.
A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “Cool and stormy this afternoon with sunny spells and scattered showers. Showers will be more frequent in the western half of the country, some will be heavy, with risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms. The highs in the afternoon. They will vary from 5 to 9 degrees with cool, gusty winds from the southwest.
“More downpours of rain or hail tonight, again more frequent in the western half of the country, although some will extend eastward from time to time. Clear periods also occur, especially in the southeast, where it will be colder. Lows of 3 at 6 degrees with moderate to cool and gusty southwest winds. “
This is ahead of much cooler conditions on Christmas week, with Met Eireann predicting sleet in many parts of Ireland on Tuesday and Wednesday.
It looks like both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be very cold, but no snow is forecast yet.
