Met Éireann issues warning as ‘extremely cold’ temperatures are expected this week

Met Éireann warns of much colder spells during the rest of the week.

It has issued a nationwide warning advisory, warning of ‘severe to severe’ frosts in parts, as well as winter rains.

Cathal Nolan from Ireland Weather Channel described what we can expect over the next few days.

“We will really notice that temperatures have dropped considerably around Wednesday afternoon, through Thursday and Friday,” he said.

“On these particular days, the highest afternoon temperatures are likely to be between 3 and 7 degrees Celsius at best.”

He added: “There will be more heat along the southern coast, where it will be more protected, but certainly very cold temperatures during the day, and then at night, where we see the winds easing or decreasing in some places, they could drop to – 3 and possibly -4 in some places. “

The warning will be in effect from tomorrow afternoon until Friday night.

  • Wednesday night: Widespread rains will continue tomorrow night, merging into longer periods of rain in the southwest. A cold night with minimum temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees with moderate winds from the southwest.
  • Thursday: Thursday will be very cold with widespread heavy rains or longer periods of rain. Temperatures will only reach between 3 and 5 degrees, so it will feel very cold.
  • Thursday night: On Thursday night, the winter rains will retreat primarily to the West Coast counties. Lower temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees, colder in Ulster and Leinster.
  • Friday: Friday will be another cold day. Temperatures during the afternoon will only reach between 3 and 6 degrees and there will also be an additional wind chill as cool to strong winds develop from the northwest.
