Met Eireann issued a 55-hour weather advisory for “severe” frosts and winter rains that will end this week.
The alert is in effect for the entire country from 4 p.m. Wednesday until just before midnight Saturday.
It says: “Much colder during the rest of the week, with sharp to severe frosts and icy sections. Some winter rains too.”
It comes as experts said there would be a “drastic change” for Thursday, with values plummeting to lows of -3 ° C.
Met Eireann forecaster Paul Downes warned that snow could fall on higher ground, but there was uncertainty about the exact forecast.
Yesterday he told the Irish Mirror: “It is too early to say what the type of precipitation will be, it could be sleet, it could be snow on higher ground, we will need to see closer to the time.”

Downes said a weather warning was unlikely at this stage, but insisted it was an “evolving situation.”
He added: “At this time it does not appear to be a warning criterion, but it is an evolving situation, so definitely keep an eye out for website updates. It seems windy at times, but most of it will remain off shore. , possible coastal warnings at times.
“Models are cutting and changing on this, so we’ll definitely let you know.”

Then there will be sunshine and rain for the rest of the day, mainly in Connacht and Ulster during the morning and afternoon before spreading to all areas later. It will be a cold and windy day with afternoon temperatures of only 5 to 8 degrees, with moderate to cool and gusty westerlies.

One forecaster added: “Thursday will be very cold with widespread heavy rains or longer periods of rain. There will be a risk of hail and thunder and some rains may turn winter on high ground in the west. The rains will retreat to western areas through Afternoon, with drier and brighter conditions elsewhere. Temperatures will only reach between 3 and 5 degrees, so it will feel very cold. Winds will be light to moderate, from the west or northwest.
“On Thursday night, the winter rains will retreat mainly to the western coast counties. Many areas will be dry with clear spells and a heavy frost on the ground that will cause some ice patches. The lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees, colder in Ulster and Leinster.
“Friday will be another cold day. Dry and sunny in many areas during the morning, with rains in the western coastal parts. Some of those rains will be heavy and possibly winter.
