Met Eireann issued a snow and ice warning for 13 counties as freezing weather engulfs Ireland.

The national forecaster’s 12-hour alert begins at midnight tonight and will last until noon on Wednesday.

Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Wexford, Wicklow, Offaly, Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford have received the yellow status warning.

The forecast indicates that it is possible for snow to accumulate at lower levels overnight and in the morning.

The Met Eireann’s overall forecast adds: “There will be good clear periods tonight as the rains recede to the Atlantic coast counties. They will turn icy and frosty early in the evening with lower temperatures of minus 3 to zero degrees.

“Winds will drop lightly and recede from the west, changing direction in the morning. Shortly after midnight, the rain will develop in the western coast counties and will spread east over the central and southern counties, becoming sleet and snow in some areas.

“An icy start for many on Wednesday. Rain, sleet and snow in the southern half of the country will clear to the southeast during the day with sparkling spells and scattered winter showers from the northwest.

“A cold day with temperatures that generally only rise a little above freezing and only slightly less cold on the shores. The winds will generally be light or moderate, varying in direction and turning north later in the day.” .
