Met Eireann has issued a yellow status warning for two counties as miserable conditions are set to hit Ireland.

The alert is in effect for Cork and Kerry from 6:00 p.m. M. From Friday until 2:00 a.m. M. From Saturday.

It says: “This windy night, the westerly winds will reach average speeds of 50 to 65 km / h and gusts of up to 100 km / h in Kerry and West Cork.”

Meanwhile, there is a separate warning for heavy rain for Donegal from 3:00 p.m. M. From Friday until 3:00 p.m. M. From Saturday.

It says: “Heavy rains at times during the period. Potential for surface and river flooding.”

The general weekend forecast is for wet and windy weather across the country, with thunderstorms also a feature.

A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “Sunny spells and scattered stormy showers, some of them laden with hail and at risk of isolated thunderstorms. Clouds will increase this afternoon and showers will merge into longer periods of rain in the western counties, before spreading east over the country tonight.

“Cool, with highs of 5 to 9 degrees with moderate to cool, gusty winds from the southwest, strengthening near the western and southern coasts later.

“Windy early tonight, with bands of rain clearing to scattered showers overnight, turning wintry at times on higher ground. The risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms will also persist.

“Cold with lows of 0-3 degrees. Fresh to strong, gusty winds from the southwest veering out of the west will hit storms at times along the coasts of Munster and Connacht.

“Saturday will be a windy day with a mix of sunny spells and stormy downpours again, some of them laden with hail and at risk of isolated thunderstorms. Some winter drops are possible on high ground in the morning.

“The rains will be more intense and frequent in the west and northwest. The highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees in cool to strong and gusty winds from west to northwest.”

However, conditions will improve next week, with a mild and dry St. Patrick’s Day on the cards.

One forecaster added: “A mild and mostly cloudy day Monday with spotty outbreaks of light rain and drizzle, the best of the sunny spells will occur in Munster and South Leinster. Higher temperatures 10-14 degrees with light to moderate breezes from West.

“After a mostly cloudy start, good periods of sunshine will develop to make for a very pleasant day for most, however, it will continue to be cooler in the north with light to moderate northwest winds with maximum temperatures of 11 to 16 degrees.

“The current indication is that St. Patrick’s Day will remain mild and dry with partially cloudy skies and highs of 11 to 16 degrees.”
