Met Eireann issued a 14-hour snow and ice warning for two counties when a freeze spell hits after Storm Bella

Met Eireann issued a snow and ice warning for two counties on Sunday with freezing conditions expected.

The forecaster expects the northwest of the country to be severely affected by cold weather and the advisory to go into effect for Donegal and Leitrim starting at 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

And the national forecaster expects some potentially heavy snowfall and the alert will last until 8pm Sunday night.

The warning reads: “Winter rains on Sunday with some possible accumulations. Risk of icy sections on untreated surfaces.”

All of Northern Ireland will also be under snow and ice warnings throughout Sunday and most of the Republic is not expected to receive as much snow.

The forecast for the whole country for Sunday says: “Tomorrow will be a very cold and windy day with spells of sun and downpours, some sleet, snow or hail.”

“The showers will mainly affect the north and west during the morning, but will be more extended during the afternoon. In the west there will be longer and stronger episodes of rain during the night. It will be a windy day with fresh and gusty westerlies and the highest afternoon temperatures of only 2 to 5 degrees “.
