A rare ‘La Niña’ event will bring some unusual conditions to Ireland over the next week.
The phenomenon occurs once every few years and can have a significant influence on our climate.
The event has a heavy impact on the North Atlantic aircraft, which will then hit Ireland with much greater intensity than usual. It is expected to bring “cold and unstable conditions” next week.
Met Eireann wrote on Twitter last night: “A La Niña event has been declared, how does this affect us?
“La Niña does not always affect our climate, but it can intensify the jet from the North Atlantic. A strong jet over Ireland can bring cold and unstable conditions.”
They also showed a dramatic map showing the expected trajectory and severity of the jet stream heading straight for Ireland.
Here’s Met Eireann’s full five-day forecast:
Monday
Tomorrow morning cloudy with more rain or drizzle. The rain will slowly clear to the northeast during the day with brilliant spells and isolated showers that will follow from the west, with more frequent showers later in the day. Higher temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with moderate breezes from the west.
Tuesday
Tuesday will be windy with widespread rains, some of which will be heavy. There will be some dry and sunny periods. Higher temperatures 12-14 degrees with moderate to cool winds from the west to the northwest. The rains will continue Tuesday night, mainly limited to the northern and western areas. Drier elsewhere with clear spells. Lower temperatures 6 to 9 degrees, with a moderate breeze from the west.
Wednesday
Wednesday will be another rainy day with sunny spells. Showers will ease during the afternoon and evening. Cool with higher temperatures of 10-13 degrees with light to moderate west breezes.
Thursday
Current indications are that the rains will continue Wednesday night and Thursday. However, there is a possibility that wet and windy conditions will spread from the southwest through Wednesday night and persist through Thursday.
Friday and weekend
The cool, rainy conditions will continue through the end of the week and into the weekend.
