Met Eireann answered the question of whether a white Christmas on the cards this year, with the answer probably not.

The forecaster said cold air will make its way through Ireland in the coming days, but it is unlikely to cause snow.

There may be some sleet on Wednesday night, but when it comes to Christmas Day, it seems like a cold, dry day.

Met Eireann tweeted: “Will it be a white Christmas? Our high-resolution model takes over Tuesday, here’s the long-range model: Brighter blue / green background indicates cooler air.

“It currently looks like it will be cold and clear with an icy start to Christmas.”

Here’s a look at the forecasters’ current prediction of what Christmas Day and Eve will be like;

Thursday (Christmas Eve)

Christmas Eve looks like it’s going to get cold with sunny spells. A dry day for most, but there will be isolated light rains on the shores. Higher temperatures 4 to 7 degrees with a light to moderate breeze from the north.

Staying mostly dry with long clear spells and a slight north or variable breeze on Thursday night – perfect for Santa’s big flight. It will be a cold night with the risk of widespread frost.

Friday (Christmas day)

At the moment, Christmas Day looks like it will be cold but mostly dry and bright. However, there is the possibility of erratic rains and drizzle in the northwest later on.
