Messi sees red in the Athletic Super Cup

Lionel Messi was sent off for the first time in his Barcelona career, as his team was defeated 3-2 after extra time by Athletic Bilbao in the final of the Spanish Super Cup.

Arturo Vidal scored in a 2-0 win over his former club Juventus to move Inter de Milan tied on points with city rival AC Milan at the top of Serie A.

In the Bundesliga, Robert Lewandowski scored his 21st goal of the season as Bayern Munich hit Freiburg 2-1.

The Polish striker has built up his account in the first 16 games of the season, breaking a Bundesliga record when he scored in the seventh minute.

Nils Petersen tied with a header in the second half, before Thomas Muller scored the winning goal in the 74th minute to claim all three points for Bayern.

Also in the Bundesliga, Luka Jovic triumphantly returned to Eintracht Frankfurt as he scored two late goals to earn a 3-1 victory over Schalke.

Jovic is back at the club on loan from Real Madrid after having enjoyed an impressive previous loan with the Bundesliga club during his time at Benfica.

In Ligue 1, Little managed to tie on points with league leader Paris Saint-Germain after coming back to secure a 2-1 victory over Reims.

Lyon He lost his chance to take first place after falling in a 1-0 loss at home to Metz.
