Lionel Messi became the all-time top scorer for a single club after scoring his 644 goal for Barcelona during their La Liga game against Real Valladolid, surpassing Pelé’s goal record for Brazilian Santos.

The 33-year-old Argentine, who equaled Pelé’s record of 643 goals with one goal against Valencia on Saturday, scored to make Barça 3-0 in Valladolid, having set up Clement Lenglet’s first goal.

Messi also intervened in Barça’s second goal, putting a pass for right-back Sergino Dest to grab on the right wing and play a cross in the way of Martin Braithwaite, who sneaked in to score in the 35th minute.

Messi capped off a brilliant individual and team display with a splendid goal midway through the second half, running behind to receive a pass from teenager Pedri and moving into the far bottom corner to eclipse Pelé’s goal mark with Santos.

The star attacker almost scored a second in overtime as he ran to goal, but fired at the post from a narrow angle.

It was Barça’s first away league win in five games, going to 24 points after 14 games, and the victory leaves the Catalan team in fifth place in the table, and remains eight points behind the leader Atlético de Madrid, who won 2-0 at home at Real Sociedad.
