Patients who are prescribed medicinal cannabis products will no longer have to travel to the Netherlands to collect their medications, the Minister of Health has confirmed.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, patients or their families had to travel to the Netherlands to collect their prescriptions for medical cannabis.
The Dutch authorities allow the filling of individual prescriptions from the EU states.
A delivery service to Ireland was established last April to help licensed physician patients obtain their prescription cannabis products on a temporary basis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This will now become permanent, Stephen Donnelly revealed today.
The minister said, “Many patients and their families have shared stories with me and with my Department officials about how this initiative has greatly improved their lives.
“They talked about the stress of having to travel regularly and the health risks associated with that, as well as their concerns that they will run out of medication.
“I am very happy that these problems are now a thing of the past for them,” continued Minister Donnelly.
“They will no longer need to travel abroad to pick up their prescription cannabis products. Instead, they can focus on their health and well-being.”
Health Department officials will now finalize arrangements regarding how the pickup and delivery service will operate permanently in the future.
