McDonalds fast food chain has announced it will reopen six restaurants in Dublin this month.

CDonalds restaurants in Ireland and the UK closed eight weeks ago over concerns related to Covid-19.

However, Paul Pomroy, Executive Director, said today that six units will reopen on Wednesday, May 20.

The location of the restaurants will be confirmed next week.

In a statement, he said: “In recent days, an updated government guide was shared in both the UK and Ireland, making it clear that takeaways and deliveries can work.”

“Today I can announce that on Wednesday May 20 we will reopen 6 Drive Thru restaurants in the Dublin area and confirm locations next week.

“In early June, we will begin our next phases of reopening our Drive Thrus in towns and cities across the UK and Ireland. We will keep you informed as restaurants open in your area.”

There will be a maximum cost of € 30 per car and customers are recommended to use contactless payment methods.

Pomroy said a series of security measures and social distancing have been introduced in kitchens.

Staff will use non-contact thermometers and check their temperature upon arrival at work.

The reopening of the “pilot” means that the menu will also be reduced and fewer staff will work in the kitchen and service areas.

Workers will also wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

He said security measures could mean that staff will operate at a slower pace as they adjust to working in smaller teams and to social distancing.

Fast food chains say the gradual reopening of restaurants in Ireland is backed by Agriculture Minister Michael Creed.

More restaurants are planned to reopen in Ireland and the UK in early June.
