McDonald’s will begin reopening in Ireland starting May 20.

The fast food giant will begin a gradual reopening of its restaurants, starting with six in the Dublin area.

These six will open for Drive Thru only on Wednesday, May 20.

The exact restaurants participating in the pilot plan will be confirmed next week.

The bosses confirmed that all of Ireland’s Drive Thru restaurants are expected to open in early June.

There will also be a € 30 limit per car on purchases when restaurants reopen, and customers will be encouraged to use contactless payments when possible.

While Agriculture Minister Michael Creed supported the reopening, he said: “McDonald’s is a valuable key buyer of Irish produce and an employer of large numbers of people across Ireland.

“Therefore, I welcome today’s announcement that McDonald’s restaurants will begin a cautious reopening in Ireland starting May 20 with a small number of restaurants opening as Drive Thru only at first.

“The past two months have certainly been difficult, both economically and socially, but the government’s recent announcement of the gradual reopening of the country offers calm and hope for brighter days ahead.”

The following measures will apply in restaurants reopened in accordance with Covid-19 advice:

  • Fewer people in the kitchen and service areas, who serve a reduced menu during reduced hours,
  • The use of non-contact thermometers, with controlled temperatures on arrival at work
  • Perspex displays at key locations in the kitchen and service areas,
  • Protective gear for our people, including gloves for courier and customer facing positions and face masks, but not the type healthcare professionals need,
  • And additional training on cleaning practices, including increased frequency of hand washing and additional disinfection of contact points around the restaurant.

McDonald’s bosses have also asked customers for patience as workers adjust to the new guidelines.

CEO Paul Pomroy said: “When your local Drive Thru reopens, it will be different. Our service will not be as fast as you might be used to as we adapt to smaller teams and social distancing in our kitchens.

“We hope there will be some lines for some of our busiest sites and our restaurants will look different, with Perspex screens on our Drive Thru windows and employees wearing protective gear.

“I ask that you continue to support and be patient with our restaurant teams as we return slowly and safely. We are asking all of our employees to adjust to how our restaurants operate now, and that they will only reopen at a rate that allows them to work. in a safe way.”
