McDonalds has announced its gradual return to business with the planned opening of six branches in Dublin starting May 20.

Dublin restaurants will start serving customers by car and will open on a pilot basis.

Agriculture, Food and Marine Minister Michael Creed welcomed the move.

He said: “McDonald’s is a valuable key buyer of Irish products and an employer to a large number of people across Ireland.

“Therefore, I welcome today’s announcement that McDonald’s restaurants will begin a cautious reopening in Ireland starting May 20 with a small number of restaurants opening as Drive Thru only at first.”

Describing Ireland’s previous economic and social conditions during the shutdown as “undoubtedly harsh,” the minister said the country’s gradual reopening offers “hope for the brightest days to come.”

In a statement, McDonald’s UK and Ireland Chief Executive Paul Pomroy said that perspex screens will be installed on Drive-thru windows and that personnel will wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

He said there will be fewer staff working in kitchens and service areas and additional training on hygiene practices will also be introduced, especially for contact areas.

Customers are encouraged to pay via contactless payments whenever possible and an order limit of € 30 will be set.
