An elementary school in Co Mayo has confirmed a positive case of coronavirus.

An urgent letter from the school, seen by the Irish Mirror, explains that the HSE has contacted the parents of the children who are considered close contacts.

Any other student who is not considered a close contact is not required to take a test.

But if any child at school develops coronavirus-like symptoms, they are asked to contact their GP as soon as possible.

Nearly one in five elementary school students last year was in classes of 30 or more children.

Mayo has largely escaped the worst of the pandemic, and this is the county’s first school to report a positive case of Covid-19.

Meanwhile, HSE Clinical Director Dr. Colm Henry confirmed last night at the Health Department briefing that a total of 54 schools here have reported one confirmed case since reopening.

However, he emphasized that this was expected, and it is only a very small percentage of the thousands of schools in the country, most of which are currently running smoothly.
