Astronomy Ireland is urging people to go out and look up at the sky tonight to see Mars burning next to the moon.
The planet is unusually bright and is scheduled to be right next to the moon on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
And it will be hard to miss as it will be brighter than all the stars around it.
Fortunately, many parts of the country are forecast to have clear conditions so that you are perfectly set up to sit in the garden and gaze up at the sky.
Here is everything you need to know about how to watch it;
What time will it be visible?
It will be most visible at 10pm tonight and again on Sunday morning at 6am if you are an early riser.
Where do I look and what will I see?
David Moore of Astronomy Ireland said: “It is very unusual for Mars to be so bright and even more unusual for it to pass very close to the Moon while at its most spectacular, which is why Astronomy Ireland is urging all Irish to go into the air Free at 10pm Saturday night and watch the Moon rise in the east with the planet Mars burning just to your left.
“It will be an amazing sight with the naked eye!
“In fact, in addition to looking at 10 PM on Saturday night, we urge everyone to set the alarm for 6 AM on Sunday morning for the ‘main event’ when Mars (now at its brightest in 2 years) is extremely close to the upper edge of the moon.
“Most people will never have seen anything like this, and it is a spectacular nature not to be missed! Raise the whole family up, especially as the weather forecast for that morning looks promising.”
When will it look so bright again?
If this event is missed, there will be another chance to see something similar in December 2022, but that is more than 2 years from now.
