Cavani, who has won the Golden Boot in both Ligue 1 and Serie A, joins a one-year contract with the option to extend it for one more year.

He said on the club’s website: “Manchester United are one of the best clubs in the world, so it is a real honor to be here. I have worked very hard during my free time and I am looking forward to competing and representing this amazing club.

“I have played in front of some of the most passionate football fans in my career and I know it will be the same in Manchester. I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere of Old Trafford, when the fans are sure to return.

“I hope to continue writing my little story within the football book and I know that is why my approach has to remain the same as always: work, work, work. I have had a conversation with the manager and this has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt ”.

Solskjaer said: “Edinson is a great seasoned professional who always gives everything for his team. His record of goals with the club and the national team is fantastic and we are delighted to sign a player of his caliber.

“He will bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he will bring goals.

“He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies in almost every club he has played for, and he still has so much more to give at the highest level.

“The opportunity for our young players to learn from one of the top scorers in Europe in the last 10 years is fantastic and will really benefit them in the future.

“Edinson knows exactly what it takes to be successful and we are all looking forward to seeing him make an impact at Manchester United.”
