A man was shot in both legs during a “barbaric” attack, increasing pressure on doctors dealing with the coronavirus, police said.

The 23-year-old victim was walking on Springhill Drive in West Belfast when a lone man approached him on a bicycle.

He was ordered to lie down before being shot and taken to the hospital for treatment for a wound to each leg.

A PSNI statement said: “Our colleagues in the health service have a challenge big enough on their hands as they continue to protect our community during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The last thing they need to do is deal with the consequences of this mindless and barbaric shooting.”

The force said it was a brutal attack for which there is no justification.

“There is no place for attacks like this in our society. Nothing gives these people the right to violate people’s human rights, and their actions must be condemned by all.

“Those who are involved in these attacks do not represent the interests of this community, nor contribute anything.

“They do it to try to exert influence, or gain control of those they claim to represent.”
