A man has been sentenced to six years for grabbing a woman from behind and putting her in the open trunk of his car.

On Tuesday, Martin Gallagher (21) of Rusheeny Avenue, Hartstown, Dublin 15, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Court to assault causing damage and false imprisonment on Blackhorse Avenue, Dublin on January 6, 2020.

During the hearing, the court heard that the 69-year-old woman was walking down a Dublin street at around 7:30 am. Gallagher grabbed her from behind and tossed her into the open trunk of his parked vehicle.

He made several attempts to close the boot to the woman, hitting her on her shins, but she continued to sit up and he was unable to close it.

Gallagher then pulled the woman out of the trunk and tried to get her into the car, but she continued to fight him and scream. He finally threw her against a wall, breaking her head before accelerating into the vehicle.

Gallagher later told Gardaí in an interview that the attack was “a joke gone wrong.”

More to follow.
