Man flees by bicycle after stealing cash in transit with hammer

A man who stole a cash box from a cash in transit (CIT) clerk while wielding a hammer fled the scene on a bicycle today.

Ardaí is asking for witnesses after the robbery on Thomas Street, Dublin at 12:45 pm today.

A CIT staff member was collecting a box of cash from a retail location on Thomas Street and, as he was returning to the security van, a lone man armed with a hammer accosted him and threatened him.

The man took possession of a cash box before fleeing the scene by bicycle.

No one was physically injured in the raid and an undisclosed sum of cash was taken.

A short time later, gardaí located an empty burning cash box on St. Kevin’s Ave in New Street, Dublin 8. The fire was extinguished and the scene and cash box have been preserved for technical and forensic examination.

A Garda Síochána on Kevin Street is asking for witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly attractive to motorists who were on Thomas Street or St. Kevin’s Avenue / New Street between 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm today to check video images (including dash cam) recorded in the area and make them available to researchers.
