A man in his 50s died after struggling while swimming in the sea off East Cork this afternoon.
The man, believed to be from the south side of Cork City, was recovered from the water by Youghal RNLI’s crew, but was pronounced dead on land shortly thereafter.
The alarm went off at 4.01pm, with reports that a swimmer had disappeared in the Caliso Bay area, east of Youghal.
The city’s coastal lifeboat was commissioned and launched in seven minutes.
The crew ran on their Atlantic-class rib into the area and arrived at the scene at 4:20 p.m.
Within seconds, a crew member saw the victim in the water about 300 meters from the lifeboat and relatively close to shore.
They recovered the man in the lifeboat and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid.
As they ran back to shore, they called for an ambulance, which was waiting when the lifeboat returned.
Paramedics and a doctor continued to work on the injured man, but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The weather conditions at the time were good, with a cool south-east wind, but sea conditions were quite rough.
The man’s remains have been taken to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the exact cause of death.
Gardaí said in a statement that they are investigating the “fatal drowning incident.”
