Man dies after being shot by Gardaí after clash in Dublin

A man has died after being shot by Gardaí in Clonee, Co Dublin.

The man, in his 20s and 30s, is known to have threatened a person in a Hartstown store with a knife. Some 15 Gardaí responded to this incident.

The man then walked a short distance to the Manorfields Estate in Clonee via a pedestrian walkway as more than 12 gardaí followed him and asked the public to stay away.

The Garda Press Office later said in a statement that the man threatened officers who were pursuing him with the knife.

Gardaí followed the man to his home on Manorfied Drive, where the Armed Support Unit also responded.

Neighbors who witnessed the incident said the man appeared to be in an extremely agitated state.

Gardaí is understood to have used less than lethal weapons on the man, but continued to act in a threatening manner.

At one point, at least one Garda opened fire and shot the man in his front garden. Neighbors reported hearing five shots.

Sources say the man was beaten three times.

An ambulance attended the scene and paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man before taking him to Connolly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead this afternoon.

Several of his family members who lived in the house have been transferred to another location.

The scene has been sealed.

A Garda investigation is underway and the Garda Ombudsman should be alerted in accordance with standard procedure.
